Understanding the Blue Badge Scheme in Kennington
Kennington residents with mobility impairments can apply for the Blue Badge scheme, the primary system for accessing disabled parking bays across the area. Lambeth Council administers this permit, which allows holders to park in designated accessible spaces and on public highways without charge. From April 1, 2025, a significant change takes effect: Blue Badge holders living in social housing will receive free permits. This initiative reflects Lambeth Council's commitment to making accessible parking more equitable for vulnerable residents. The council has worked closely with community feedback to develop these improvements. Disability Parking Regulations and Enforcement in Kennington
Understanding local regulations protects both your parking rights and community resources. Accessible parking spaces in Kennington must meet specific standards, typically 2.4 metres wide, to accommodate wheelchair-accessible vehicles. Misuse of these bays carries serious consequences, with fines reaching £130 for violations. Enforcement is particularly strict in high-traffic areas like Kennington Park and local shopping districts where demand is greatest. Lambeth Council takes these violations seriously to ensure bays remain available for genuine Blue Badge holders.
The regulations exist because accessible parking is genuinely scarce in this densely populated south London neighbourhood. When non-disabled drivers occupy these spaces, they directly harm residents who depend on them for independence and dignity. Kennington's enforcement officers patrol regularly, especially near transport hubs like Kennington Loop station, just 181 metres away.
