Understanding Wigan's Blue Badge Scheme
In Wigan, disability parking permits operate primarily through the Blue Badge scheme. This scheme serves individuals with severe mobility issues, terminal illnesses, and other qualifying disabilities. Blue Badge holders can access designated spots throughout the borough, including council-run car parks and on-street bays in busy areas like Wigan town centre, near the Wigan Life Centre, and close to the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary. Wigan Council issues these permits, valid for up to three years. They provide essential accessible parking near key services and transport links like the Wigan and Kirkby Line station.
The scheme recognises genuine mobility challenges. Permit holders enjoy priority access to accessible parking bays specifically designed for disabled individuals. These spaces are strategically positioned throughout the borough to ensure ease of access to hospitals, shops, civic buildings, and community facilities. Wigan has invested significantly in making these spaces both functional and well-located. Whether you're visiting Wigan Market, attending an appointment, or accessing local services, Blue Badge holders benefit from dedicated spots that reduce walking distances and improve independence.
