Free Weekend Parking at Wigan Town-Centre Car Parks
Wigan Council offers free weekend parking on council-owned town-centre car parks in Wigan. Chapel Lane car park is reserved for permit holders from Monday to Friday but offers free weekend parking (wigan.gov.uk).
Hindley Walk Car Park provides free weekend parking and has 31 spaces, including three disabled spaces. Free parking at the named council car parks is therefore most useful for Saturday and Sunday town-centre visits, while weekday visitors need a permitted or paid option.
Wigan CPZ Bays and Lines That Can Turn Free Parking Into a PCN
Wigan Council Controlled Parking Zones require drivers to use designated parking bays, while kerbside parking outside those bays is subject to yellow-line restrictions. Double yellow lines in Wigan operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including public and bank holidays. Single yellow lines operate during the hours shown for the relevant CPZ unless a street has a specific time plate. Uniformed Civil Enforcement Officers enforce Wigan’s CPZ restrictions (wigan.gov.uk).
Within the Leigh CPZ, shared-use bays can be used by non-permit holders, but the bays are limited to one or two hours and operate Monday to Saturday from 9am to 5pm. Wigan CPZ signs at entry roads show the operating hours for each zone, and street signs identify the zone. A vehicle without the required permit, or a vehicle breaking another restriction, is liable for a Penalty Charge Notice.

Wigan Council accepts online payment for a parking or moving-traffic fine by credit or debit card 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The council’s PCN management facility allows a driver to view the notice details and photographs, make a challenge or representation, and make a payment. A driver who disputes a Wigan PCN can use the challenge or representation process attached to the notice rather than allowing the discounted payment period to pass.
