Obtaining Your Disability Parking Permit
Getting a disability parking permit in Baton Rouge is straightforward. You'll need a Louisiana Driver's License or Identification Card to start the application process. The Louisiana Department of Motor Vehicles issues both temporary permits (valid one year) and permanent permits (valid four years). Temporary permits require a physician's certificate each renewal, while permanent permits only need certification at initial issuance.
Visit the Mobility Impaired Hang Tags & Plates page to begin your application. You'll need medical documentation (either a Medical Examiner's Certification or Disabled Veteran's decision letter) to verify eligibility. FastPass locations throughout Baton Rouge offer expedited processing for hang tags and license plates, making the entire experience faster and less stressful.
Registration and Display Requirements
Once you receive your state-issued placard, registration with local authorities is essential. LSU Parking & Transportation Services manages ADA space registration for campus and affiliated areas throughout the city. Complete the ADA Registration Form and submit identification documents. Your driver's license and mobility paperwork are typically required. A $30 deposit for gate device access may apply to specific accessible parking locations.
Always display your valid placard when parked in designated spaces. Possession of an ADA permit doesn't automatically grant access; the physical placard must be visible on your vehicle. Failure to display it properly can result in citations, even if you're legally eligible. The registration process ensures local authorities can verify your legitimacy and protect these spaces for those who genuinely need them.
