Free Evening Parking at Canberra City Car Parks
Canberra City public car parks offer free parking from Wednesday to Sunday evenings from 5:30pm, making the arrangement useful for dinner, cultural visits and evening appointments in the centre (Canberra Museum & Gallery). Canberra Centre car parks use a different evening arrangement: entry after 6pm and exit before midnight attracts a $4 flat rate, while entry or exit between midnight and 6.00am attracts a $10 overnight charge (Canberra Centre). Canberra Centre parking is therefore a low-cost evening option, not general free parking.
Mobility-Permit Concessions in Canberra No-Parking Areas
A mobility-permit holder displaying the permit may stop for up to 5 minutes in a Canberra no-parking area under section 168(3)(c) of the Road Transport (Road Rules) Regulation 2017 (Access Canberra). The concession belongs to the displayed mobility permit, so it is not a general free-parking entitlement for other drivers.
The Access Canberra infringement guide identifies the five-minute limit as a stopping concession in a no-parking area, rather than permission to leave a vehicle there indefinitely (Access Canberra). A driver using the concession must keep the mobility permit displayed and remain within the stated stopping period. Regular free parking in a Canberra public car park or Park and Ride location is separate from the mobility-permit rule and does not change the requirements applying to no-parking areas.
