Most meters charge $2 an hour while operating, and the meter displays the applicable rate. Parksy garages near San Jose’s South Market and Santa Clara streets
When free spaces in central San Jose are full, Parksy lists a secure garage at 55 South Market Street, 247 yards away, at $12 an hour. The same 55 South Market Street garage also has a $20 daily option at the same distance, making the hourly listing more suitable for short stops and the daily listing more suitable for a longer downtown visit.
Parksy also lists secure covered parking at 225 W. Santa Clara, 0.2 miles away, for $12 a day. This space suits drivers who want a priced, covered alternative near downtown rather than continuing to circle for a free street space.
San Jose time limits, permits, and enforcement hours that affect free spaces
San Jose enforces meter and other time-restricted zones, residential permit parking zones, school zones, loading zones, disabled spaces, fire hydrants, and no-parking or no-stopping areas (sanjoseca.gov). A residential permit space is free only for vehicles authorized by the applicable residential permit, not for general visitors. San Jose also restricts parking for safety near crosswalks, intersections, and narrow or high-volume roadways, while disabled spaces are reserved for vehicles displaying the required disabled placard or plate.
San Jose event parking and lower-cost options when free spaces disappear
Free parking in San Jose becomes harder to find around SAP Arena and the Convention Center because multi-space meters can operate during arena events, including some Sundays and city holidays (sanjoseca.gov). Drivers visiting those areas should expect the event schedule to affect both availability and price.
Those named options are cheaper than the maximum event rate when a full-day stay is needed, while the $12-an-hour 55 South Market Street listing is aimed at shorter stays.
San Jose parking citations, deadlines, and contesting an overstay
San Jose may issue a parking citation when a vehicle violates a posted regulation, including an exceeded posted time limit, expired meter, residential permit rule, street-sweeping restriction, or disabled-space rule (sanjoseca.gov).
San Jose requires a parking ticket to be paid or contested within 21 days. San Jose mails a courtesy reminder to the registered owner after 15 days when the ticket remains unpaid or uncontested, and tickets missing the deadline incur additional penalties and lose appeal eligibility (sanjoseca.gov). San Jose provides payment and contest instructions through its Office of Parking Violation, which can be reached at (800) 294-8258.
