Parking Near McAllen
Free parking periods at McAllen’s downtown garage
Downtown McAllen’s parking garage at 221 S. 15th St is open 24 hours, giving drivers a named central location for parking at any time of day (mcallen.net). The garage lists a free period of 0 to 10 minutes. The free period applies to the garage’s first tariff band and is distinct from the garage’s paid bands.
Those charges belong to the Downtown McAllen garage rather than to public curb spaces. Drivers looking for a free stay therefore need to leave within the garage’s published 0-to-10-minute period.
McAllen meter rules and citation timing
McAllen’s parking-meter code requires a parking meter beside or alongside each public-street parking space designated for metered parking (ecode360.com). A curb space governed by a meter is therefore not a general free space simply because it is on a public street. The meter designation determines whether payment applies to that space.
McAllen’s published ticket notice sets the improper-parking citation fee at $15. The city notice says the fee increases to $20 when the citation remains unpaid for 10 business days (mcallen.net). The rule concerns improper-parking citations issued in McAllen, while the Downtown McAllen garage has its own published tariff. A driver using a metered curb space should treat the meter and posted controls as the governing conditions rather than assuming downtown street parking is free.
