Parking Near Alexandria
Free Parking Options on Alexandria Streets and Meters
Alexandria’s most practical general free parking is on metered commercial blocks when the posted payment period ends. Most meters operate until 9 p.m. or 6 p.m., depending on the block, so an evening arrival can avoid payment after the local end time (alexandriava.gov).
Old Town has metered spaces along King Street and the perpendicular blocks to the north and south. Those spaces typically allow two or three hours during the regulated period, but the free period outside payment hours still follows the individual block signs (alexandriava.gov). Residential streets can also have unrestricted spaces, but only where signs do not impose a residential permit, payment, time, overnight, or no-parking restriction.
Alexandria Permit Zones, Time Limits, and Free Concessions
Alexandria residential permit parking districts generally limit non-permit vehicles to two or three hours during varying enforcement periods. The exact limit and hours belong to each signed block, and the residential permit exception applies only to vehicles displaying the appropriate district permit (alexandriava.gov). District 12 is stricter: streets with the relevant signs prohibit parking on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., except for vehicles registered with Alexandria or displaying a District 12 guest or visitor permit.
Overnight restrictions also apply on signed blocks from midnight to 6 a.m. nightly unless the vehicle is registered with Alexandria or displays a guest or visitor permit. A vehicle with a disability license plate or hangtag may park free for up to four hours on metered blocks and for twice the posted restricted time in time-limited zones (alexandriava.gov).
Busy Old Town Days and Cheaper Parking Near Alexandria
Old Town is most difficult when visitors, workers, and residents compete for the two- and three-hour metered spaces along King Street and nearby perpendicular blocks. Commercial areas including Carlyle, Potomac Yard, and Oakville Triangle also use metered parking, so free Sunday or after-hours spaces can disappear quickly when demand rises (alexandriava.gov).
For a cheaper paid fallback, Fairfax Connector lists the Huntington Avenue Park-and-Ride at 2701 Huntington Avenue, Alexandria, with $4.85 per day parking.
Parksy Garage, Lot, and Valet Spaces Near Alexandria Destinations
When free street spaces are full, Parksy lists a 239 Queen St. lot 0.3 miles away at $10 a day. The lot suits drivers who need a predictable all-day space close to Old Town rather than repeatedly moving between short-stay street bays. Parksy also lists a convenient garage 250 yards away at $10.99 a day, which is useful for a longer visit when weather protection or a structured facility matters.
For shorter stays, Parksy lists prime and commercial garage spaces 250 yards away at $13.99 an hour. Two higher-priced options, a prime garage space and premium valet parking, are 136 yards away at $53 an hour.
Alexandria Parking Citations, Enforcement, and Appeals
Alexandria’s parking meter information states that most parking fines and citations are $55 per violation. Police officers, parking enforcement officers, and parking enforcement contractors regularly patrol public streets to enforce stopping, standing, and parking rules (alexandriava.gov). A citation can result from exceeding a signed time limit, parking without a required permit, failing to pay during regulated meter hours, or violating restrictions such as the citywide rule against parking within 20 feet of intersecting curb lines.
Alexandria uses pay-by-plate meters, and the city prohibits feeding a meter to extend parking beyond the posted maximum. Drivers who receive a citation can use the city’s parking-citation process to pay or contest it, as described by Alexandria’s parking authority (alexandriava.gov).
