Residents and visitors should familiarize themselves with the specific restrictions that apply to popular areas, such as Old Town, where limited parking can often be a challenge.
In Alexandria, parking meters are commonly found along busy streets like King Street and Washington Street. These meters typically charge $2.00 per hour, with a maximum parking duration of two hours. Additionally, residential areas may have permit parking zones, requiring a valid permit for parking during certain hours. Residential Permit Zones and Time Restrictions
In Alexandria, residential street parking is governed by specific rules designed to ensure fair access for residents. Permit-only zones dominate many neighborhoods, particularly near landmarks like the King Street–Old Town Metro station. Residents can apply for these permits to secure their spots during busy times. Streets such as Oronoco Street and Wythe Street often have time-limited parking, with restrictions typically enforced from 8 AM to 10 PM on weekdays.
Violating these rules can lead to fines of up to $50, making it crucial to pay attention to signage. The City of Alexandria enforces Section 10-4-41 of the City Code, which prohibits parking within 20 feet of intersecting curb lines to keep traffic moving smoothly. Temporary visitor permits can be obtained online, allowing non-residents to park for up to seven days. This system facilitates guests visiting residents who may otherwise struggle to find available car spaces in congested areas.
Metered Parking Rates and Payment Methods

Rates typically range from $1.50 to $2.00 per hour, depending on the specific district and demand levels. Many meters in Alexandria are operational from 8 AM to 10 PM, so plan accordingly to avoid incurring fines during restricted hours.
Monitor posted signs carefully, as specific hours and rates vary between different streets throughout the city. Reading Alexandria Parking Signs and Restrictions
Alexandria's parking signage can appear confusing at first glance, with multiple restrictions layered on single streets. Time restriction signs indicate when metered parking applies, while separate signs show permit requirements for residents. Many motorists overlook details indicating spot availability or time limits, especially during peak hours when attention naturally diverts to finding any available space. The inconsistency in visual presentation means you must stop and carefully read each sign before parking. For essential guidance on local regulations, consult the City of Alexandria official parking page.
Distinguishing between resident-only zones, visitor permit areas, and general metered parking requires careful attention to detail. Some streets switch between permit-only parking and metered parking at specific times, such as transitioning to evening visitor parking after 6 PM. Electronic signage on certain blocks displays real-time availability and rate changes, helping drivers make informed decisions. The city has invested in clearer signage over recent years, but local knowledge remains invaluable for navigating Duke Street, Queen Street, and other busy commercial corridors effectively.
Understanding Enforcement and Patrol Schedules
In Alexandria, parking enforcement operates through a structured system with specific patterns designed to ensure compliance. The city employs dedicated parking rangers who regularly patrol high-traffic areas, particularly around the King Street–Old Town corridor and near Washington Metro stations. This consistent monitoring aims to ensure fair access to available spaces for both residents and visitors. Alexandria utilizes advanced technologies including electronic chalking and ANPR cameras to track parked vehicles efficiently and identify violations with precision.
Many drivers report receiving citations during lunch hours (11 AM to 1 PM) and mid-afternoon (3 PM to 5 PM), when ranger patrols peak in commercial districts. By staying informed about these enforcement hours and peak patrol times, you can better plan your parking strategy and avoid unnecessary fines. The Alexandria Police Department and dedicated parking enforcement teams coordinate to maintain order across the city's 15.5 square miles.
