In Somerville, Massachusetts, towed vehicles can become a significant inconvenience for residents and visitors alike. The city's bustling streets, such as Davis Square and Union Square, often lead to stringent parking regulations enforced by the Somerville Parking Authority. If your vehicle has been towed, it is essential to act quickly to recover it, as impound fees can accumulate daily, typically starting at around $50 per day for a standard vehicle.
To retrieve your towed vehicle in Somerville, you must contact the local towing company and provide necessary documentation, such as your vehicle registration and proof of identification. Be prepared to pay any outstanding fees, which may include towing costs and daily storage fees, depending on how long your vehicle has been in the impound lot. The Somerville Police Department collaborates with local towing services to ensure that improperly parked vehicles are removed efficiently, especially in high-traffic areas near landmarks like Assembly Row and the Somerville Theatre.

Understanding Towing Fees and Payment Options
Your wallet takes a hit fast. The initial release fee sits at $150, with an additional $30 per day for storage after day one. These costs accumulate quickly if you delay recovery. Payment accepts cash, credit cards, and debit cards at the Medford lot.
Daily storage fees mean a week-long delay costs an extra $210 on top of your release fee. Somerville parking violations often stem from street cleaning schedules on Washington Street, Davis Square vicinity, or snow emergency declarations you might have missed. Understanding what triggered your tow helps prevent repeat incidents. For detailed fee breakdowns, the city's Somerville Police Department website provides official towing information and payment procedures.
Wrongful Towing: Know Your Rights in Somerville
Believe your car was towed without cause? You have recourse. Whether you parked legally but missed a posted restriction, or the signage was genuinely unclear, dispute procedures exist. Start by documenting everything: photos of the parking spot, any signage (or lack thereof), and the date and time.
Contact the Somerville Police Station at 220 Washington Street with your claim check and evidence. The City of Somerville Parking Department handles formal dispute claims and can review whether the tow was authorized. Filing a written complaint with the city may result in fee reimbursement if the tow violated proper procedure. You may also file directly with Stephen's Towing, though the city is usually the faster route.
Preventing Tows: Parking Smart Around Somerville
The real solution? Avoid the tow altogether. Street cleaning schedules shift seasonally on Washington Street and surrounding blocks. Check the Somerville city calendar. Snow emergencies trigger rapid towing; subscribe to city alerts. Residential permit zones require proper displays in neighborhoods like Union Square and Porter Square.
Consider booking guaranteed private parking through peer-to-peer platforms starting at just $12 per day instead of risking council spaces at $45 daily. This eliminates guessing games about regulations and keeps your car safe while you explore Davis Square or attend events. Private Parking Solutions Beat Towing Stress
Peer-to-peer parking in Somerville offers peace of mind. Instead of circling Assembly Row or downtown streets for 20 minutes, book a guaranteed parking spot beforehand. Rates start at $12 per day, far cheaper than $150 towing fees plus storage. You avoid the emotional toll of not knowing where your car is or when you'll get it back.
Somerville's population density of 19,671 per square mile makes free street parking nearly impossible. Private spots near Davis Square, Union Square, and Somerville Avenue give you flexibility without fear. Whether you're commuting to work, grabbing lunch, or running errands, knowing your spot is secure changes everything. This approach saves time, money, and stress.
