History Of Roanoke Airport

In 1929, the City of Roanoke leased 136 acres to open up Roanoke Airport - the same site it stands on today! Then in the 1930s and 1940s, American Airlines began its first passenger service here and it was also chosen as a National Defense Project. It was renamed to honor Clifton A. Woodrum for his efforts in securing the project, becoming Roanoke Municipal Airport/Woodrum Field. Fast-forward to the 1980s and it was given another name change to Roanoke Regional Airport/Woodrum Field after major investment. In 2014, Roanoke received its third and final name change, to Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport, to reflect the close economic ties between Roanoke and the New River Valleys.
