If you find yourself in the unfortunate situation of having your vehicle towed in Oxford, Mississippi, understanding the local impound recovery process is essential. Vehicles are often towed due to illegal parking, expired registration, or violations of city ordinances enforced by the Oxford City Council. Common towing hotspots include crowded areas near the University of Mississippi campus, around the Square, and along popular streets like Jackson Avenue and University Avenue.
Once your vehicle has been towed, it is vital to act quickly to recover it. You will need to identify which towing company has impounded your vehicle, as many towing services operate in the area. Typically, recovery fees can range from $100 to $300, depending on the type of vehicle and duration of impoundment. Additionally, you may incur storage fees of $20 per day. To reclaim your vehicle, you should visit the towing company’s lot, present valid identification, and pay all applicable fees. Remember, the sooner you address the issue, the easier it will be to get back on the road and avoid additional charges associated with the towing process.

Street parking violations can trigger immediate towing services without much warning. Before searching frantically, check whether your vehicle was parked in a restricted zone or clearway. The local towing company maintains detailed records of all vehicles in their facility, so a quick phone call typically resolves the mystery. Understanding where you parked and what signs were posted can save precious time and frustration.
Understanding Oxford's Towing Fees and Payment Process
Towing costs in Oxford add up quickly. The standard release fee is $75, with an additional $15 charged for each day your vehicle sits in the impound lot. A vehicle towed on Monday afternoon could cost $150+ by Wednesday if left unclaimed. Payment methods include cash and credit cards, and Shivers Towing processes both efficiently. Time matters here. Every day of delay increases your total expense, so prompt action is essential.
Beyond the obvious fees, storage charges accumulate relentlessly. If your vehicle remains impounded for a week, you're looking at $180 total ($75 release plus $105 storage). This financial pressure affects many Oxford residents and visitors unfamiliar with local parking enforcement rules. Shivers Towing provides transparent pricing, but it's crucial to understand these costs exist before parking illegally. For comprehensive details on Oxford's parking regulations and how to avoid violations, consult the council's parking guidance to stay fully informed about local requirements.
Your Rights When Towing Goes Wrong
Oxford drivers have legal protections against wrongful towing. If you believe your vehicle was improperly removed, file a dispute immediately with the towing operator. Document everything: the exact location, time of day, photos of any signage, and witness contact information. These details form the foundation of your complaint. Many wrongful towing cases stem from unclear or missing parking restriction signs, giving you legitimate grounds for compensation.
The dispute resolution process involves contacting both the towing company and local authorities. Shivers Towing must respond to documented complaints within a reasonable timeframe, and if they cannot justify the tow, refund your fees. Escalation to Oxford's municipal authorities may be necessary for cases involving improper vehicle recovery or fee disagreements. Keep all receipts, communication records, and photographs organized. If you need expert guidance on disputing a tow, resources like the parking dispute resolution guide can walk you through each step methodically.
Preventing Future Towing Incidents in Oxford
Prevention beats recovery every time. Learn Oxford's parking rules before parking anywhere unfamiliar. Downtown areas, Jackson Avenue, and spaces near the Oxford Commons enforce strict restrictions during business hours and events. Read every sign carefully: "No Parking 8AM-6PM" differs vastly from "No Parking Anytime." Ignorance won't protect your vehicle from towing enforcement officers. Take a moment to understand the restrictions before leaving your car unattended.
Consider alternative parking solutions to eliminate towing risk entirely. Reserved private parking spaces offer guaranteed access without the stress of finding street parking daily. Many Oxford residents have shifted toward peer-to-peer parking apps and dedicated lots to avoid clearway violations and unexpected towing fees. Using Oxford parking alternatives can provide peace of mind and predictable monthly costs. Whether you're a commuter, student, or visitor, understanding your options keeps your vehicle safe and your wallet fuller. The small investment in proper planning prevents the large expense of towing recovery.
